Specially produced calendars have been popular this season and Longridge photographer Caroline Holden has combined her skills and love of ballet to create one with Stonyhurst College and its dance teacher Anna Southward.

They worked on themes around the college, both inside and out, to create a calendar now marketed by Stonyhurst’s Arrupe team to raise money for the Stonyhurst Children’s Holiday Trust and Friends of Chernobyl’s Children.

Caroline explained: “We called it the Ballerina Project after seeing images from a similar one in New York city, using that city as a magnet for creativity, each photograph being a collaborative work of dance, fashion design and photography played out against the city’s landscape.

“Stonyhurst is also such a magnificent setting, that it seemed the ideal place to begin a local dance based project – although I hadn’t quite bargained for the weather!”

Anna added the project involved many of her enthusiastic ballet students who all had great fun dressing up and taking on the varied characters in each chosen theme.

“That sort of involvement is such a massive part of learning dance – once it’s in your heart the technical work that you learn in class can then start to come alive.”

The themes include references to the famous author Arthur Conan Doyle who created the character Sherlock Holmes. He studied at the college and Stonyhurst is thought to be the setting for The Hound of the Baskervilles.

The month of September honours the 40th anniversary of the death of another famous author, JRR Tolkien, a frequent visitor to the Ribble Valley whose name appears many times in the Stonyhurst guest book between 1942-1947.

He found time to write part of the Lord of the Rings in a classroom on the upper gallery at the college, enjoyed walks around the area with his son Michael, who later taught classics at Stonyhurst in the 1960s and 70s. Tolkien also taught a few lessons at the college on his visits there.

The calendars cost £15 and are available by contacting dance@stonyhurst.ac.uk
