Fans, supporters and stallholders at Longridge Farmers’ Market will be saying farewell to event organiser Thomas Calderbank on Saturday, January 26, and welcoming new organisers, Longridge Social Enterprise Company.

It will be the first market of 2013 but the last one for the dedicated team organiser who has run the monthly markets for just over a year.

“I have enjoyed running the Longridge Farmers’ Market,” he told the News. “Organising the events has taught me valuable lessons that will no doubt come in useful in future years.

“I would like to thank all those who have assisted me in establishing and sustaining the markets over the previous 18 months, especially our regular customers and stallholders who have loyally come back month after month.

“I am confident that under the leadership of the Longridge Social Enterprise Company, the market in Longridge will continue to thrive. I am sure that new ideas and energy will be invested into the venture, to ensure its longer term sustainability as an attraction for the town.

“Unfortunately, our smaller market in Ribchester wasn’t as successful; simply owing to the weather on market days and a lack of footfall.”

Local councillor and LSEC chairman Rupert Swarbrick gave his and the company’s thanks for Thomas’s consistently hard work, which has also included helping with the Big Longridge Weekend and the restructuring of the former Extravaganza night into the Christmas Fest.

“We will now be looking for a designated volunteer to help run the markets,” added Coun Swarbrick.

“We want to keep up their momentum and are also looking at the possibility of expanding them to include craftspeople.”

Thomas is now reading Politics and Economics at Lancaster University, and says “so who knows where this will take me in future years!”
